RIO VISTA, Calif -The Real McCoy ferry, which at its daily peak carried 50 to 150 vehicles each day, is scheduled to return to service Sunday on the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta.
The 63-year-old ferry returns after six weeks in dry dock for repairs. The ferry had undergone work at a San Francisco dry dock facility, according to the California Department of Transportation.
The ferry carries farmers and tourists across a short stretch of water between State Route 84 in Rio Vista and Ryer Island in Solano County. Once, the state had a small navy of ferries. But now there are only two state-run ferries, the Real McCoy and the J. Mack, a few miles to the northeast.
Caltrans said it was the first dry dock service in eight years for the ferry, whose twin six-cylinder service engines sprung leaks and its hulls were dented from bumping into docks.
After the Real McCoy returns, Caltrans will perform a seven-day test run with full service on the barge. Febuaray 21, 2009 By Bill Lindelof blindelof@sacbee.com

In an hour or so, we'd be nosing the bow of the good ship 385 into a sandy bank. Once we were safely anchored to the shore, my wife, Lynne, could lounge out astern in her inflatable raft and I could start thinking about barbecuing our dinner. Continue Click Here February 23,2009
